A Magistrates' Court sitting in Kano has remanded a newlywed woman, Khadija Sa'idu, in a correctional facility over the alleged culpable homicide of her husband, Malam Auwal Adam, following a heated disagreement over her request to attend a social gathering. The court, presided over by Magistrate Haulatu Magaji Kankarofi, ordered the remand of the suspect after she was arraigned by the police on Thursday, August 20, 2026, for allegedly stabbing her husband in the chest and neck at their residence in Hayin Lawal, Rimin Kebe, Kumbotso Local Government Area of the state. According to the facts presented before the court, Khadija had sought her husband's permission to attend a party, but he reportedly refused to allow her to go.
The prosecution alleged that following the disagreement, the suspect stabbed her husband in the chest while he was asleep on a couch. Auwal was rushed to Murtala Muhammad Specialist Hospital, where doctors reportedly confirmed his death from injuries sustained during the alleged attack. During Thursday's proceedings, the prosecutor informed the court that the case file was awaiting legal advice from the state counsel to determine the appropriate next step in the prosecution. Magistrate Kankarofi subsequently adjourned the matter until September 8, 2026, for further mention and ordered that Khadija remain in custody at a correctional facility.
The case has drawn attention to the rising incidents of domestic violence and spousal killings in Kano State, coming just weeks after a Kano High Court sentenced a 19-year-old woman, Saudat Jibrin, to death by hanging for the murder of her 30-year-old husband, Salisu Idris, nine days after their wedding. In another incident in June 2026, a housewife identified as Fatima allegedly stabbed her husband, Auwalu, to death less than two months after their marriage in the Rimin Kebe quarters of the state. The recurring pattern of domestic homicides has prompted calls from civil society organisations for stronger intervention mechanisms to address the root causes of marital violence and provide support for couples in distress.
The allegation against Khadija Sa'idu is yet to be determined by the court, and she remains presumed innocent until proven guilty. The suspect, a resident of Hayin Lawal, Rimin Kebe, in Kumbotso Local Government Area, was taken before the court by the police on a charge of culpable homicide. As the case progresses toward the September 8 mention date, the prosecution will need to establish whether the stabbing was premeditated or occurred in the heat of passion, a distinction that could significantly impact the severity of any potential sentence. For now, the families of both the suspect and the deceased are left to grapple with the aftermath of a tragedy that began with a simple request to attend a party.
