The Federal Government has declared Tuesday, August 25, 2026, a public holiday to commemorate this year's Eid ul Mawlid, the annual celebration marking the birth of the Holy Prophet Muhammad. The announcement was made on Friday, August 21, 2026, by the Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, in a statement issued by the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, Dr Magdalene Ajani. Tunji-Ojo, who announced the holiday on behalf of the Federal Government, extended warm felicitations to Muslims in Nigeria and across the diaspora. In his message, the minister urged all Nigerians to reflect on the timeless values of compassion, humility, and service to others that defined the life of the Prophet Muhammad.

"Every Eid ul Mawlid gives us reason to pause and draw lessons from a life defined by compassion, humility and service to others," Tunji-Ojo said. "These are qualities our nation needs now more than ever, and I encourage every Nigerian, not just our Muslim brothers and sisters, to reflect on them". The minister stressed that the occasion provides an opportunity for Nigerians to reflect on values essential to national development and peaceful coexistence. He further called on citizens to use the celebration to pray for peace, unity, and national cohesion, emphasising that maintaining the country's unity is a collective responsibility. Tunji-Ojo urged Nigerians to celebrate the occasion with restraint and mutual respect while wishing the Muslim community a peaceful Eid ul Mawlid.

The minister also reaffirmed the Federal Government's commitment to protecting lives and property and ensuring the sustenance of peace across the country. He advised celebrants to mark the occasion modestly and with deep respect for one another, avoiding any actions that could disrupt public order or offend religious sensibilities. The Eid ul Mawlid holiday, which falls on the 12th day of Rabi' al-Awwal in the Islamic calendar, is traditionally observed with prayers, sermons, charitable giving, and family gatherings. As Nigerians prepare to observe the holiday, the minister's call for reflection on compassion and unity resonates against the backdrop of the nation's ongoing challenges, including economic hardship, security concerns, and political tensions ahead of the 2027 elections.

The public holiday declaration comes amid a period of heightened national discourse on governance and accountability, with citizens increasingly demanding transparency and action from their leaders. While the holiday offers a moment of respite and spiritual reflection, many Nigerians will be watching to see whether the government's call for compassion and unity translates into tangible policy actions that address the pressing needs of the people. For now, the nation prepares to observe Eid ul Mawlid, with the hope that the values espoused by the Minister of Interior will find expression not just in words but in deeds that foster a more peaceful, just, and prosperous Nigeria.
