The Anambra State Police Command has arrested five suspected members of a criminal gang and recovered illicit drugs valued at N1.45 million, a counterfeit United States $100 note, vandalised electrical wires and N72,550 in cash during a targeted raid on a suspected criminal hideout in Nawfia, Njikoka Local Government Area. The operation was carried out on Thursday, August 20, 2026, at approximately 12:48 p.m. by operatives of the Rapid Response Squad, Awkuzu, following credible intelligence alleging criminal activities at the location. The suspects were identified as Omogo Obinna, 29; Okechukwu Nwagba, 28; Echezona Okonkwo, 29; Awal Umar, 23; and Ogadinma Boniface, 33.

In a press statement released on Friday, August 21, 2026, the Police Public Relations Officer for the Anambra State Command, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, said the operatives recovered substantial quantities of substances suspected to be Cannabis Sativa (Indian Hemp), Canadian Loud, Black Mamba, Colorado and Loud. The police spokesperson added that the suspects had made useful statements to investigators and allegedly mentioned the names of other members of the criminal network operating within the area. Preliminary investigation indicates that the suspects are members of a criminal network operating in the area, and the police have intensified efforts to apprehend other fleeing members of the gang.

The Commissioner of Police, Anambra State Command, CP Nnanna Oji Ama, commended the operatives for the successful operation and directed that the investigation be pursued thoroughly and professionally. He also ordered intensified efforts to apprehend other fleeing members of the gang and ensure that all persons found to have participated in the criminal activities are brought to justice. The Command assured residents of its continued commitment to tackling drug-related crimes, vandalism and other forms of criminality across the state.

The raid in Nawfia has drawn attention to the range of criminal activities allegedly being pursued from the location, with the recovery of drugs, counterfeit currency and vandalised electrical infrastructure pointing to a wider criminal ecosystem. However, the police have not publicly established that each of the five suspects personally handled every item recovered, nor has any court determined their guilt. At this stage, the allegations remain the subject of police investigation. The police have urged members of the public to continue providing credible and timely information, stressing that community cooperation remains critical to preventing and combating crime in Anambra State.
