President Bola Tinubu of Nigeria arrived in Brasília on Monday to begin a high-level state visit, following a flight from Los Angeles, United States. The Nigerian leader was warmly received at the Brasília Air Base by senior Brazilian government officials, including Ambassador Carlos Sérgio Sobral Duarte, Secretary for Africa and the Middle East, and Ambassador Carlos José Areias Moreno Garcete, Brazil’s Ambassador to Nigeria. Nigeria’s Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, Bianca Ojukwu, also attended the reception.

The visit includes a formal welcoming ceremony with full military honours at the Planalto Palace, where President Tinubu will hold a bilateral meeting with Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva. Expanded meetings with senior officials from both countries will follow, along with the signing of several Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) and a joint press conference.

As part of the programme, President Tinubu will meet with the President of the Brazilian Senate, the President of the Chamber of Deputies, and the President of the Supreme Federal Court. He will also participate in the Nigeria-Brazil Business Forum, aiming to enhance trade, investment, and cooperation between the two nations.

Nigeria and Brazil share a long history of diplomatic relations, with Nigeria establishing its embassy in Brazil in 1966. Brazil was the only Latin American country to participate in Nigeria’s independence celebrations in 1960. Since President Tinubu’s inauguration in 2023, bilateral relations have deepened through multiple high-level engagements, including his attendance at the BRICS Leaders’ Summit in Rio de Janeiro in July 2025 and prior participation in the 2024 G20 Summit in Brazil.

The two nations have previously signed MoUs to strengthen cooperation in sectors including agriculture, trade, defence, energy, education, power, petroleum, and mining. Recent initiatives include Brazil’s $2.5 billion JBS investment to support food security in Nigeria and the ongoing $1.1 billion Green Imperative Programme, which aims to provide tractors and farm equipment to boost local agricultural productivity.

The state visit underscores Nigeria and Brazil’s commitment to deepening strategic, economic, and diplomatic ties, reflecting a shared vision for sustainable development and enhanced cooperation across.
