The Anambra State House of Assembly has suspended Honourable Bernard Udemezue, member representing Ayamelum Constituency, for three months without pay following alleged unparliamentary conduct. The Assembly warned that he should not be seen within the legislature during the suspension period.
The decision was based on a report by the House Committee on Rules, Business, Ethics and Privileges, chaired by the Majority Leader, Sir Ikenna Ofodeme. The House also directed Hon. Udemezue to issue a public apology to the Speaker, Rt. Hon. Somtochukwu Udeze, and members of the 8th Assembly via his official social media platforms within five working days.
The Assembly addressed serious allegations raised by Hon. Udemezue regarding the State Government’s purported links to the kidnap and murder of the late Hon. Justice Azuka and an alleged impeachment plot. It urged the Commissioner of Police and the Director of the Department of State Security Service to investigate, noting that Udemezue may hold crucial information to aid security agencies.
Additionally, the House mandated that Udemezue attend special training sessions on parliamentary ethics, practices, and duties. Members were also cautioned to adhere strictly to the House’s Standing Orders, emphasizing that social media is not an appropriate channel for legislative business.
The suspension reflects the Assembly’s commitment to maintaining decorum, discipline, and integrity within the legislature. It underscores the importance of upholding parliamentary standards, ensuring that lawmakers conduct themselves responsibly both in legislative chambers and in public spaces, while also balancing accountability with due process in handling serious allegations.
