FG Urges Stronger Commitment to Road Safety Strategy

The Federal Government has called on the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) and other stakeholders to recommit themselves to the Nigeria Road Safety Strategy in order to address the nation’s troubling record of road fatalities.

Vice President Kashim Shettima made the appeal on Wednesday in Abuja at the FRSC’s 8th Annual Lecture Series. He described recent statistics on road deaths as disturbing, stressing that much more work is required to make Nigeria’s roads safer.

While commending the FRSC for its innovation and dedication, Shettima cautioned that the country cannot afford complacency. He urged stakeholders to embrace indigenous solutions, while also collaborating with global partners to achieve lasting results.

“The road ahead remains long and demanding. We must recommit ourselves to implementing the Nigeria Road Safety Strategy. Only through shared responsibility across all tiers of government, the private sector, and civil society can we guarantee sustainable outcomes,” he said.

As Chairman of the National Road Safety Advisory Council, the Vice President reaffirmed the Tinubu administration’s commitment to strengthening institutions like the FRSC and EFCC, ensuring professionalism and independence in their operations. He added that safer roads remain a priority under President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda.

Other speakers, including Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Senator George Akume, and FRSC Corps Marshal, Shehu Mohammed, emphasized the importance of partnerships, capacity building, and interagency coordination in promoting road safety as a key component of national development.
