The Honourable Commissioner for Information, Hon. Abdullahi Bego, has praised Yobe State Governor, His Excellency Hon. (Dr) Mai Mala Buni, CON, COMN, for his sustained commitment to the professional development of journalists and the broader media community in the state.
Speaking at the recently concluded three-day capacity-building workshop for members of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) held at Tahir Guest Palace, Kano, Hon. Bego delivered a paper titled “Democracy and Good Governance in Nigeria: An Analysis of the Buni Years in Yobe State.” He lauded the governor’s dedication to fostering a strong and productive partnership between the government and the media, emphasizing that journalists play a pivotal role as public information managers, promoting transparency, trust, and citizen engagement.
Hon. Bego highlighted that the Buni administration’s media strategy is rooted in inclusivity, leveraging all available channels to communicate effectively with the people of Yobe State and the wider Nigerian public. He stated, “The overriding objective of Governor Buni’s media strategy is to sustain a cordial, productive, and active working relationship with the NUJ and the entire journalism community in Yobe State and beyond.”
The Commissioner further noted several initiatives taken by the administration to strengthen media practice, including direct support to the NUJ and its members, training for Information and Public Relations Officers, provision of modern working tools, and renovation of Yobe Broadcasting Corporation (YBC) studios damaged by fire. He also highlighted the upgrade of YBC transmission capacity, the transition of casual staff to permanent and pensionable positions, the move to 24-hour broadcasting, and plans to establish a new state television station to replace outdated YTV equipment.
The workshop, themed “The Nigeria Union of Journalists, Democratic Governance and Contemporary Issues in the Development of Yobe State,” equipped participants with essential skills and resources to enhance their professional practice. As part of the initiative, each of the 100 NUJ participants received brand-new laptops and other training materials, reinforcing the administration’s commitment to media capacity-building.
Hon. Bego expressed confidence that the knowledge gained from the workshop, combined with the government’s continuous support, would further empower journalists to perform their duties effectively and contribute meaningfully to the socio-economic development of Yobe State.
