The Lagos State Government, led by Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has reaffirmed its commitment to advancing social protection initiatives through the National Social Register (NSR).

The assurance was delivered by Deputy Chief of Staff, Mr. Sam Egube, who represented Governor Sanwo-Olu at a recent one-day Stakeholders’ Engagement themed: “Advancing Social Protection through the National Social Register.” At the event, Egube also received the Champion of Care Award on behalf of the governor for social protection implementation in Nigeria.

Egube commended President Bola Tinubu for repositioning the NSR as a reliable platform for delivering interventions and highlighted Lagos State’s efforts in registering all residents, especially the vulnerable, through the Ministry of Economic Planning and Budget, led by Commissioner Ope George and Permanent Secretary Mrs. Olayinka Ojo.

The deputy chief of staff further announced the governor’s promise to increase the state’s allocation to Social Services and the Social Protection Sector from N130 billion in 2025 to N170 billion in 2026, underscoring Lagos State’s commitment to improving the lives of its citizens.

Speaking at the event, Ms. Funmi Olotu, National Coordinator of the National Social Safety-Net Coordinating Office, noted that the NSR has become one of the world’s largest social protection databases, capturing over 19 million heads of households and individuals, with the recent integration of the National Identification Number (NIN) enhancing its reliability and inclusivity.

Other speakers, including Dr. Badamasi Lawal, CEO of the National Social Investment Programme Agency, and HRH Dr. Olufolarin Ogunsanwo, Alara of Ilara Kingdom, emphasized the necessity of social protection as a civic duty rather than mere benevolence.

The event brought together stakeholders from federal and state governments, development agencies, civil society, media, and traditional rulers from Lagos’ Five IBILE Divisions, highlighting the importance of collaboration in driving social protection initiatives. Key government officials, including members of the Lagos State Executive Council and the Body of Permanent Secretaries, were also in attendance.
