Abuja, Nigeria — Senator Ali Ndume, representing Borno South Senatorial District, has called on the federal government to urgently strengthen the Nigerian Army’s capacity to combat insurgency and banditry, warning that current security gaps could lead to further territorial losses in the North-East. His appeal follows a recent fact-finding visit to communities in Borno State devastated by terrorist attacks.
Ndume addressed journalists in Abuja on Tuesday after visiting the communities of Ngoshe and Pulka in the Gwoza Local Government Area over the weekend alongside Governor Babagana Zulum. The visit allowed them to assess the damage caused by coordinated attacks from Boko Haram and ISWAP fighters, which resulted in the deaths of soldiers, community leaders, and civilians, as well as the abduction of women and children.
The senator noted that soldiers were initially forced to withdraw from some areas because they were outgunned by insurgents, underscoring the urgent need for more sophisticated arms, ammunition, and modern combat equipment. He urged the federal government to provide the military with the necessary resources to confront terrorist groups effectively and prevent future losses.
Describing the situation in Ngoshe as devastating, Ndume said much of the town had been destroyed, leaving only a small mosque standing. He praised Governor Zulum for his leadership and presence in the affected areas, and he called for federal support for humanitarian relief and reconstruction to assist displaced families and help communities rebuild.
Ndume highlighted that without decisive action and adequate military reinforcement, the security situation in Borno and neighboring areas could deteriorate further, allowing insurgent groups to consolidate control in some regions. He emphasized that upgrading military capabilities, including modern weaponry and improved logistical support, is crucial for restoring stability and protecting civilians.
The senator’s appeal reflects growing concerns over insurgent activity in the North-East, where communities continue to face attacks despite ongoing military operations under Operation HADIN KAI. Ndume also stressed that alongside military reinforcement, reconstruction of homes, infrastructure, and public services is necessary to ensure long-term recovery and stability for affected populations.
As discussions continue in the National Assembly over security priorities and budgetary allocations, the federal government’s response to such calls will be critical in determining the effectiveness of Nigeria’s efforts to combat insurgency and support displaced and affected communities in the North-East.
