Lagos State swimmer, Abduljabar Adama, has made history by winning a silver medal for Nigeria at the ongoing World Aquatics Junior Swimming Championships in Otopeni, Romania — the nation’s first-ever podium finish at the global swimming event.
Adama clinched silver in the Men’s 50-metre Butterfly, finishing with an impressive time of 23.64 seconds, marking Nigeria’s best performance on the world stage since the inception of competitive swimming in the country.
The young athlete had earlier announced his arrival on the continental stage when he won gold at the Africa Aquatics Junior Swimming Championships in Cairo, Egypt, in March this year.
Abduljabar, a product of Lagos State’s grassroots sports development programme, first came into the spotlight at the National Youth Games in Ilorin, Kwara State, an annual multi-sport competition for athletes under 15.
Reacting to the historic achievement, the Director-General of the Lagos State Sports Commission (LSSC), Lekan Fatodu, described Adama’s success as a clear testament to the effectiveness of the state’s grassroots sports initiatives, which focus on discovering, nurturing, and grooming young talents for national and international glory.
“This milestone is proof that with the right investment in our young athletes, Nigeria can compete and excel on the global stage,” Fatodu affirmed.
