The National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) has reassured corps members nationwide that they are fully covered by a comprehensive insurance scheme throughout their mandatory one-year service, reinforcing government efforts to protect the welfare and safety of young Nigerians participating in the programme. The announcement was made by Brigadier General Olakunle Nafiu, the Director-General of the scheme, during a high-level engagement in the nation’s capital.

Speaking on Thursday in Abuja at the NYSC National Directorate headquarters, General Nafiu emphasised that the insurance package forms a core part of corps members’ welfare support, covering both life and medical contingencies from the moment call-up letters are issued, even before corps members depart their homes for orientation camps. The clarification was issued in a formal statement by Caroline Embu, Director of Information and Public Relations for the NYSC, following a courtesy visit by Mallam Jibrin Ndace, Director-General of the Voice of Nigeria, who commended the NYSC’s leadership and welfare initiatives.

According to NYSC leadership, the comprehensive insurance cover is part of long-standing provisions established by the federal government to ensure that corps members are protected against a wide range of risks they may encounter during their service year. Every corps member is automatically covered under the arrangement, which includes emergency health care, life insurance benefits, and additional interventions for situations not ordinarily covered by standard policies. The National Health Insurance Authority is responsible for administering health care benefits when corps members fall ill, and the insurance policy takes effect from the earliest stages of mobilisation.

General Nafiu highlighted that the scheme has responded decisively in extraordinary cases that extend beyond routine medical care. He cited examples where the NYSC insurance framework made life-saving interventions, including a payment of ₦28 million to treat a pregnant corps member and her unborn child after a serious road accident, as well as a ₦33 million expenditure to provide prosthetic arms for another corps member injured while travelling from an orientation camp to their place of primary assignment. These cases demonstrate the scheme’s commitment to supporting corps members in critical situations.

The director-general also cautioned against the circulation of misinformation in some media outlets about the nature and extent of the insurance cover. He urged journalists and stakeholders to confirm facts directly with official NYSC sources before publication, affirming that the insurance package remains robust, up to date, and backed by policy support from the federal government.

In addition to insurance matters, General Nafiu reaffirmed that the NYSC’s posting policy is carefully calibrated to contribute to national development needs while safeguarding corps members’ safety. He stated that the policy avoids deployments to unsafe or high-risk areas whenever possible, and that corps members have continued to play significant roles in national assignments such as elections, community sensitisation programs, and census exercises — activities that have drawn commendation locally and internationally.

The visit by the Voice of Nigeria’s director-general highlighted growing collaboration between the NYSC and national media institutions to promote public awareness of the scheme’s activities and impact. Ndace praised General Nafiu’s leadership and expressed VON’s readiness to amplify positive narratives about the service year and the contributions of corps members to national development, positioning the NYSC’s work as integral to Nigeria’s socio-economic progress.

General Nafiu, who took over as NYSC director-general in March 2025, succeeding Brigadier General Yusha’u Ahmed, has placed strong emphasis on welfare, transparency, and reform since assuming office. His tenure has focused not only on insurance coverage but also on improving orientation camp conditions, boosting job creation initiatives for corps members, and strengthening partnerships with public and private institutions.

The NYSC’s comprehensive insurance policy aligns with broader government efforts to enhance welfare protections for young graduates serving across all 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory. With President Bola Tinubu’s recent approval of additional mobilisation slots for the 2026 service year, the scheme anticipates a larger cohort of participants and emphasises its readiness to maintain safety, support, and welfare standards for all corps members.

While the programme remains a pillar of Nigeria’s national unity strategy — sending young graduates into diverse communities to foster cross-cultural engagement and support public services — concerns about security challenges and calls for periodic reforms continue to shape public and official discourse. Nonetheless, the comprehensive insurance cover reaffirmed by NYSC leadership is acknowledged as a critical guarantee for corps members and their families, offering an added layer of protection in uncertain circumstances.
