On March 19, 2026, the Taraba State Police Command confirmed a deadly assault by suspected bandits on security forces and local defenders in Donga Local Government Area, underscoring the persistent insecurity in Nigeria’s Middle Belt region. The attack claimed the lives of three police officers and a local vigilante chairman following a distress call from a resident reporting an armed raid on Tordamisa Akate Ward.
The incident unfolded when the resident alerted authorities that armed men, believed to be bandits, had attacked Tse Kwe Village. In response, a tactical team led by the Divisional Police Officer was deployed to confront the assailants and protect villagers. Upon arrival, the team came under intense gunfire, leading to a prolonged and deadly exchange.
Three officers — Corporal Raphael Danjuma, Police Constable Ebenezer Daniel, and Police Constable Samuel Bawa — were killed while attempting to contain the violence. Constable Bawa had initially been reported missing but was later found dead in a nearby bush. Alongside the officers, 60-year-old Nutsa Tyav, chairman of the local vigilante group in Tordamisa Village, also lost his life during the attack.
Authorities described the victims as dedicated security personnel and community defenders who paid the ultimate price protecting civilians. The Taraba State Police Commissioner expressed deep sorrow over the loss and extended condolences to the bereaved families. Security forces have since reinforced patrols in the area and urged residents to provide information that could help apprehend the attackers.
The bandits reportedly fled after the confrontation. Officials noted that the ambush appeared coordinated, with the attackers using motorcycles and small arms to gain an advantage over the initial response team. This incident reflects a broader pattern of organized criminal activity in Nigeria, where rural banditry, kidnappings for ransom, and violent raids on remote communities have become increasingly frequent.
Taraba State has experienced repeated attacks in recent years, often targeting civilians and local defence groups. Security experts highlight gaps in rural protection, intelligence limitations, and coordination challenges that leave communities vulnerable. Analysts suggest that combining community-centred security approaches with technological surveillance and improved infrastructure could help reduce the frequency and severity of such attacks.
The deaths of the police officers and the vigilante leader prompted widespread grief and condemnation across Nigeria. Many citizens mourned the loss while criticizing the persistent insecurity affecting rural areas. Authorities have reassured the public that they are committed to tracking down the perpetrators and preventing further attacks, calling on residents to provide credible intelligence and cooperate with security operations.
This attack comes amid growing pressure on the Nigerian government to address insecurity nationwide, particularly in regions prone to banditry and militant activity, as the country prepares for the 2027 general elections. The loss of Corporal Danjuma, Constables Daniel and Bawa, and vigilante chairman Nutsa Tyav underscores the risks faced by those protecting communities on the front lines of Nigeria’s security challenges.
