Residents of Aso community in Karu Local Government Area of Nasarawa State, near the Maraba/Masaka axis close to Abuja, were thrown into panic on the morning of March 25, 2026, after armed men carried out a violent raid, burning homes and vehicles and forcing families to flee.

Eyewitnesses said the attackers, suspected to be Fulani bandits, moved through the settlement in the early hours, setting ablaze several compounds and private vehicles. Smoke from the fires was visible for miles, while residents ran to nearby bushes and neighbouring communities to escape the assault. Videos shared by locals showed armed men moving through the area as families fled.

Accounts from residents suggest the attack may have been linked to a clash the previous day in which a Fulani herder was reportedly killed during a grazing dispute. Conflicts between herders and farmers over land, water, and grazing rights have historically led to violent confrontations in Nasarawa and other parts of central Nigeria.

Community members said they managed to apprehend at least one suspect during or immediately after the raid. As of midday on March 25, no official casualty figures had been confirmed, and authorities, including the Nasarawa State Police Command, had not issued formal statements regarding the incident.

The attack has added to ongoing concerns about insecurity in peri-urban areas near the Federal Capital Territory, where rapid population growth and land pressures have occasionally escalated disputes into violence. Residents expressed fear for their safety and called on local and state authorities to intervene, restore security, and bring the perpetrators to justice.

Families displaced by the raid have sought shelter with relatives or in bush camps while assessing the losses from the attack. The full extent of property damage, casualties, and potential long-term displacement is still being determined as community members and authorities continue to evaluate the situation.

Security analysts emphasize that until local security measures are strengthened and dialogue between herders and farming communities is improved, the risk of further violence and displacement remains high. Ongoing patrols, intelligence gathering, and community cooperation are viewed as essential to prevent similar incidents in the future.
