Unofficial reports emerging from Zamfara State indicate that a notorious bandit leader, Kachalla Haire, widely known by his Hausa nickname “Mala’ikan Mada” (the Angel of Mada), has been killed following a violent clash between rival bandit factions. The incident reportedly occurred during a dispute over the sharing of belongings and weapons left behind by a deceased gang leader.
The clash took place in the forest hideouts around the Mada axis of Gusau Local Government Area, where Haire had long been accused of orchestrating terror attacks and spreading fear among farming communities.
Two community sources who spoke on condition of anonymity told Stone Reporters News that the disagreement escalated into a gun battle, and Haire was fatally shot. A leader of the rival faction was also reportedly injured, though that information remains unverified.
If confirmed, the death of Kachalla Haire could mark a significant development in the region’s long‑running security crisis. Haire’s name has been linked to repeated raids on villages along the Kotorkoshi‑Mada road, a corridor notorious for kidnappings and ambushes.
In January 2026, an Islamic cleric, Malam Zainu Mada, was kidnapped along that same road and killed by his captors after a ransom was paid. Governor Dauda Lawal has consistently declared that his administration will not negotiate with bandits, and security forces have intensified operations under the Joint Task Force North‑West, Operation FANSAN YAMMA.
The military campaign has recorded several successes in recent weeks, including the neutralisation of other kingpins. However, concerns remain that Haire’s death could trigger reprisal attacks and further factional violence as rival gangs battle for control of territory and criminal networks. Authorities have not yet issued an official statement confirming the killing, and residents are urged to remain vigilant while security agencies continue their operations.
