A fresh wave of terror swept through Maigora town in Faskari Local Government Area of Katsina State in the early hours of Tuesday, May 12, 2026, when armed bandits invaded the community around 2 a.m., rustling cattle and seizing a resident’s motorcycle before escaping into the surrounding bush. The latest attack has renewed fear among residents, who have grown increasingly sceptical about ongoing negotiations between authorities and armed groups in the region. Despite repeated assurances from officials that peace talks are making progress, raids and attacks on farming communities have continued unabated, leaving locals questioning the sincerity and effectiveness of the reconciliation process.
According to residents who spoke to Stone Reporters News on condition of anonymity, the bandits struck at the darkest hour of the night, moving swiftly through the town. “They knew exactly where to go. They took several cattle and also snatched a motorcycle from one of our neighbours. By the time we raised the alarm, they had already disappeared into the bush,” a resident said. No casualties were reported in the attack, but the psychological impact on the community has been severe. Many families, already living in constant fear, have begun considering relocating to safer towns, even if it means abandoning their farmlands and livelihoods.
The attack on Maigora is the latest in a series of violent incidents that have plagued Faskari LGA despite ongoing mediation efforts between government officials and armed groups. For months, local authorities and security agencies have been engaged in dialogue with bandit factions, hoping to broker a lasting peace that would allow farmers to return to their fields and children to attend school without fear. However, the persistent raids suggest that either the negotiations have not brought all factions to the table, or that some criminal elements are simply ignoring any agreements reached.
Residents have expressed growing frustration with the disconnect between official statements on peace and their lived reality. “We are told that talks are progressing, yet every week we hear gunshots. Our cattle are our savings, our bank. When they take them, they take our future,” another resident lamented. The seizure of a motorcycle, a vital means of transportation for many rural families, has further underlined the audacity of the attackers, who now target not only livestock but also personal property.
Community leaders are now demanding transparency from officials leading the peace efforts. “If the negotiations have collapsed or are no longer capable of delivering security, shouldn’t authorities tell the public the truth so communities can decide how to protect their lives and property?” a local elder asked. The question echoes across Maigora and other frontline villages in Katsina State, where residents have been forced to form vigilante groups and sleep in shifts to guard their homes.
As of the time of this report, the Katsina State Government and the Police Command had not issued any official statement regarding the attack on Maigora town. Residents say they are waiting to hear from officials on what concrete action will follow this latest violation. With the planting season underway and families depending on their farms for survival, the window for effective security intervention is rapidly closing. For now, the people of Maigora are left to bury their fear and count their losses, hoping that the next round of talks might finally bring the peace that has so far eluded them.
