President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has granted formal approval for Nigeria to host the 2026 Confederation of African Football (CAF) Awards ceremony and the 48th CAF Ordinary General Assembly. The announcement was made on Tuesday, May 12, 2026, during the Africa Forward Summit in Nairobi, Kenya, following a high‑level meeting between President Tinubu and CAF President Dr. Patrice Motsepe. Also present at the meeting were Nigeria’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Bianca Odumegwu‑Ojukwu; President of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), Ibrahim Gusau; former NFF President and Special Adviser to the CAF President, Amaju Pinnick; and CAF Acting Secretary‑General, Samson Adamu.

The approval was confirmed in a statement issued by the NFF’s Director of Communications, Ademola Olajire, who noted that Nigeria’s selection reflects the growing confidence in the country’s ability to host major continental sporting events. The 48th CAF Ordinary General Assembly is scheduled for October 2026 and will bring together presidents of CAF’s 54 member associations, representatives of the six zonal unions, and senior football administrators from across Africa to discuss key policy and governance decisions. The CAF Awards ceremony, Africa’s most prestigious annual football celebration honouring outstanding players, coaches, teams, and administrators, will take place in December 2026. Nigeria previously hosted the CAF Awards in Lagos and Abuja in 2017 and 2015 respectively. The upcoming edition marks the return of the awards to Nigerian soil for the first time since January 2017.

The decision is expected to enhance Nigeria’s sports tourism profile and further position the country as a premier destination for continental football governance and international sporting events. Football stakeholders have described the development as a major boost for Nigeria’s image, infrastructure development, and economic activity within the host city, which is yet to be announced. The successful bid also underscores the strengthening relationship between Nigerian football authorities and the leadership of CAF under Patrice Motsepe. By hosting both the administrative congress and the glamorous awards ceremony, Nigeria is poised to play an even more influential role in shaping the future of African football.
