Human rights activist and convener of the #FreeNnamdiKanuNow protest, Omoyele Sowore, narrowly escaped gunfire after security operatives opened fire to disperse demonstrators in Abuja on Monday morning.

According to Stone Reporters News, the protest, which began around 7:00 a.m., quickly turned chaotic as armed police and military officers stormed the protest grounds, taking full control of the area.

In a viral video circulating on social media, Sowore was seen running for safety alongside other protesters, as gunshots rang out. Witnesses at the scene said the protesters had gathered peacefully with the intention of marching to Aso Rock Villa to demand the release of Nnamdi Kanu, the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB).

The heavy-handed response of the security forces has since drawn widespread condemnation from civil rights advocates, who argue that the protesters were merely exercising their constitutional right to peaceful assembly and free expression.

As of press time, there were no reports of casualties or arrests, but tension remains high around the Federal Capital Territory.
