As part of activities marking Urban October, the Edo State Development and Building Control Agency (EDDBCA), in collaboration with the Ministry of Physical Planning, Urban and Regional Development (MPPURD), has embarked on a demolition exercise in Irhirhi aimed at restoring the area to its original urban design.
Speaking during the exercise, the Managing Director of the Agency, Hon. Igabali Darlington Imoisili, expressed dissatisfaction over the defacing of the area’s aesthetics, noting that unauthorized structures and shanties were compromising the city’s appearance.
“This stretch has been defaced by all manner of structures—caravans, kiosks, and unauthorized buildings. We don’t want that. We want a city that is clean, safe, and aesthetically beautiful. That’s why we are removing these illegal structures,” Hon. Igabali stated.
The managing director revealed that the demolition exercise has been ongoing for the past three weeks across various locations in the state. While prior notices were served to occupants of affected structures, many failed to comply. He condemned residents who erected unauthorized buildings, emphasizing that such actions undermine the state’s urban development goals.
Hon. Igabali assured that cleared spaces will not remain bare, stating plans to collaborate with the Parks and Gardens Agency to green the areas and enhance their visual appeal. He also issued a stern warning to individuals continuing to build illegally on the right-of-way, stressing that the government would enforce the law against offenders.
Supporting the exercise, the Director of Urban and Rural Planning Development, Dr. Mazisheyi Adegbiyega, described Urban October as a period to reflect on the importance of reclaiming and preserving the environment. Meanwhile, the Director of the Department of Development Control, Town Planner Henry Enabulele, urged residents to adhere to due process and regulatory guidelines when erecting buildings.
The demolition initiative reflects Edo State’s ongoing commitment to sustainable urban planning, ensuring the city remains organized, safe, and visually appealing.
