Igbo Town Unions have petitioned the United Nations Human Rights Council, the African Commission on Human and Peoples’ Rights, and the ECOWAS Court of Justice over the ongoing demolition of shops and properties belonging to Igbo traders and investors in Lagos State.
The petition highlights concerns over the repeated targeting of Igbo-owned businesses during government-led demolition exercises, which the unions describe as discriminatory and damaging to livelihoods.
The unions are seeking intervention from international human rights and regional justice bodies to address the matter, ensure protection of property rights, and hold authorities accountable for any violations of human and economic rights.
This development underscores growing tensions over property rights and the treatment of ethnic minority investors in urban redevelopment initiatives in Lagos.
