The Abia State Government has announced a 100 percent increase in teacher deployment across the state, a move attributed to the ongoing reforms in the education sector led by Governor Alex Otti’s administration.
Commissioner for Information, Prince Okey Kanu, disclosed this during a briefing to journalists on the outcome of this week’s State Executive Council meeting. He credited the increase to policies such as the recruitment of new teachers, introduction of free primary and junior secondary education, regular payment of teachers’ salaries, financial incentives for rural postings, and raising the retirement age from 60 to 65. Other reforms include regular training and retraining of teachers, improved learning environments, and the adoption of new school curricula.
Prince Kanu emphasized that the government is closely monitoring teacher deployment, particularly in rural communities, to curb absenteeism.
On issues relating to promotion and leave allowances, Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Mr. Ferdinand Ekeoma, explained that a committee comprising the Head of Service, Accountant General, Commissioners for Finance, Justice, and other officials is addressing pending gratuities and allowances. He urged workers to provide evidence of salary disparities across local government areas to facilitate harmonization.
Addressing absenteeism, Ekeoma warned teachers against refusing rural postings, stating that reposting will no longer be an option, and reminded them that postings to urban areas such as Aba and Umuahia cannot accommodate all newly recruited teachers. He appealed for alignment with the government’s vision to transform the education sector.
In another development, Governor Alex Otti is set to commission the newly completed Umuene Court Complex in Isialangwa South LGA this Wednesday as part of ongoing judicial reforms. Prince Kanu noted that this facility is one of 16 modern court complexes being constructed across the state’s 17 LGAs to enhance access to justice, describing the new buildings as state-of-the-art with modern facilities.
Prince Kanu also used the briefing to launch a statewide road safety campaign titled “Road Safety is a Shared Responsibility, A Drive to Arrive”, executed jointly by the State Ministry of Transport, Harmonised Task Force, and FRSC, warning that no motorist would be exempt from enforcement.
