The Lagos Operations Office of the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) has concluded search and rescue efforts following the collapse of a two-storey building at No. 59 Coates Street, near the Cemetery off Oyingbo Road, Lagos Island, in the early hours of Monday, October 27, 2025.

The incident triggered an immediate multi-agency response, with teams from NEMA, Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA), LASAMBUS, Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, LASBCA, LASPPPA, LASTMA, and the Nigeria Police Force converging on the scene. Extrication equipment was deployed to retrieve trapped occupants from the debris.

After hours of intensive rescue operations, 20 individuals were rescued alive and promptly taken to nearby hospitals for treatment, while two fatalities were confirmed. NEMA reported that all occupants were accounted for by the conclusion of the operation.

Preliminary assessments indicated that the building had been previously marked for demolition by the Lagos State Building Control Agency (LASBCA), but residents reportedly ignored evacuation directives, contributing to the tragic outcome.

The Nigeria Police Force supervised the clearing of the site and maintained security and crowd control throughout the operation. NEMA commended the swift and professional intervention of all agencies involved and reiterated the importance of compliance with official safety notices to prevent avoidable loss of lives.
