Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, representing Kogi Central, has revealed that political fear and intimidation prevented many of her colleagues in the Senate from publicly supporting her during her recent suspension.

Speaking on Sunday at the inauguration of a new market in Okene, Kogi State, Akpoti-Uduaghan acknowledged that while several senators reached out privately to express solidarity, they avoided public displays of support due to concerns over potential political repercussions.

She described her suspension as illegal and said it highlighted how fear and political pressure influence behavior within government institutions. “When a government official faces challenges, isolation comes naturally,” she said. “Even when people are sympathetic, they are afraid to associate with you openly for fear of being castigated or persecuted. Many senators stood by me quietly — they called, they visited — but in public, they couldn’t show it. I’m not offended by that.”

The lawmaker’s comments shed light on the pressures faced by public officials in navigating political dynamics while maintaining integrity and alliances in Nigeria’s legislative framework.
