President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has declared a state of emergency for the training facilities of the Nigeria Police Force (NPF), the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), and other internal security agencies, citing concerns over their outdated infrastructure and declining operational effectiveness.
The announcement was highlighted during an inspection conducted by Governor Peter Mbah of Enugu State, who chairs the National Economic Council (NEC) ad-hoc Committee tasked with overhauling the country’s security training institutions. The inspection took place in Lagos, where committee members assessed the facilities and outlined the urgent need for modernization.
Joining Governor Mbah, Governor Prince Dapo Abiodun, along with the committee’s Secretary, former Inspector General of Police Alkali Usman Baba, and Assistant Inspector General of Police Olatunji Disu, responsible for the Special Protection Unit (SPU), confirmed that the committee has been given 30 days to produce a comprehensive report for the NEC, which will guide further reforms and investments in the security training sector.
The move underscores the federal government’s commitment to strengthening internal security, ensuring that personnel are adequately trained, and addressing the operational gaps caused by decades of neglected infrastructure.
