The European Union (EU) has reiterated its commitment to supporting Nigeria, emphasizing the importance of respecting the country’s sovereignty, while focusing on peacebuilding, interfaith dialogue, and human rights protection.
Speaking to the News Agency of Nigeria in Lagos, EU Ambassador to Nigeria and ECOWAS, Mr. Gautier Mignot, affirmed that the EU’s stance is independent and grounded in a long-standing partnership and shared values with Nigeria. He assured that the EU and its member states will continue to support victims of violence, assist authorities in protecting citizens, and promote peaceful coexistence across ethnic and religious communities.
Mignot highlighted the EU’s readiness to enhance security and defence cooperation, collaborating with civil society, traditional leaders, and religious organizations. He pointed to ongoing programs addressing deradicalization, demobilization, and reintegration of former members of non-state armed groups in Nigeria’s North-East.
The ambassador also emphasized protection for minorities and religious freedom, noting that Nigeria’s legal framework supports human rights. He stressed that EU assistance is non-discriminatory, covering all victims of violence, while reinforcing interfaith dialogue and initiatives for peaceful coexistence.
EU-Nigeria cooperation, according to Mignot, is guided by a mutual interest in a stable, prosperous, and democratic country, with plans underway for a security and defence dialogue to deepen strategic collaboration.
The statement comes in the wake of US President Donald Trump’s threat of military action over alleged anti-Christian violence, in which Nigeria was labeled a “Country of Particular Concern,” with warnings that aid could be cut if attacks on Christians continue.
