Nigeria has taken a historic step in digital governance by hosting the first-ever International Conference on Theory and Practice of Electronic Governance (ICEGOV) in West Africa, solidifying the country’s role as a continental leader in digital innovation.
The achievement stems from a vision championed by the Hon. Minister of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy, Dr. Bosun Tijani, who emphasized the importance of investing in deep research and deep tech to build a sustainable digital economy. Nigeria previously participated in the 17th ICEGOV 2024 in Pretoria, South Africa, which inspired the country to bring the event to Abuja.
At the opening ceremony, Director General of NITDA, Kashifu Inuwa Abdullahi, highlighted that Nigeria’s hosting aligns with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, which focuses on economic diversification through industrialization, digitalization, creative arts, manufacturing, and innovation.
“Digital is not just a tool, it is an inspiration. It challenges us to rethink governance, to collaborate, and to co-create innovation that truly serves the people,” DG Inuwa said, emphasizing Nigeria’s commitment to inclusive, citizen-driven digital governance.
Through ongoing initiatives in digital literacy, innovation, and public service transformation, Nigeria is positioning itself as a hub for technology and governance collaboration, enabling citizens to actively engage in shaping the nation’s future.
The conference, themed “Shaping the Future of Digital Governance through Cooperation, Innovation, and Inclusion,” welcomes global participants to Abuja, marking a defining moment in Africa’s digital transformation and showcasing Nigeria’s leadership in harnessing technology for governance and development.
