Abuja, Nigeria — November 6, 2025 — The National Commissioner and Chief Executive Officer of the Nigeria Data Protection Commission (NDPC), Dr. Vincent Olatunji, has met with representatives of Civil Society Organisations (CSOs) led by the Programme Manager of Global Rights, Mr. Esosa Oviawe, to explore collaborative efforts in advancing data privacy, digital rights, and public awareness across the country.
During the courtesy visit to the Commission’s headquarters, Mr. Oviawe commended the NDPC for its leadership in strengthening Nigeria’s data protection and privacy ecosystem since the enactment of the Nigeria Data Protection Act, 2023 (NDP Act). He stressed the importance of continuous engagement between the Commission and CSOs to foster transparency, build public trust, and expand citizen awareness about their privacy rights in the digital age.
“Civil society has been closely monitoring the Commission’s progress, and we are eager to partner on training initiatives and grassroots sensitisation,” Oviawe said.
In his response, Dr. Olatunji expressed gratitude for the visit and emphasised the importance of collaboration with CSOs in achieving the Commission’s goals. He noted that awareness creation and human capital development are key components of the NDPC’s Strategic Roadmap and Action Plan, underscoring the role of CSOs as valuable partners in reaching diverse communities.
He also revealed that the Commission had translated the NDP Act into Yoruba, Hausa, and Igbo to enhance inclusivity and ensure that Nigerians at the grassroots can understand their rights and responsibilities under the law.
Both the NDPC and CSO representatives reaffirmed their shared commitment to promoting privacy, trust, and accountability within Nigeria’s rapidly evolving digital landscape.
