Lagos – November 5, 2025: The House Committee on Safety Standards and Regulations has called on the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) at Tincan Island Port to sustain heightened vigilance in preventing the entry of substandard and potentially harmful goods into the country.

The appeal came during an oversight visit to the port, aimed at assessing compliance with national safety standards and global best practices. Comptroller Frank Onyeka, Customs Area Controller, reiterated the Service’s commitment to balancing national security, trade facilitation, and revenue collection. “Our mandate under the Nigeria Customs Service Act, 2023 is to ensure that what is declared is what is seen, and that appropriate duties are collected,” he said.

Comptroller Onyeka also highlighted ongoing collaboration with other government agencies to inspect cargo and intervene whenever shipments are suspected of containing dangerous products. “In situations where we suspect a cargo contains anything that might harm society, we invite the appropriate authorities, and we have sustained this progressive synergy to date,” he added.

Honourable David Zacharias, Chairman of the Committee, commended the Customs Command for its efforts and emphasised the shared responsibility of safeguarding Nigerians against unsafe goods. Committee members recommended continued inter-agency cooperation and engagement with port stakeholders to strengthen the monitoring and enforcement of safety standards.

The visit underscores growing attention to ensuring that imported goods meet quality benchmarks and that the country’s trade corridors remain secure for consumers and businesses alike.
