Nobel Laureate Professor Wole Soyinka has publicly urged the Federal Government to issue an apology to Yoruba activist Chief Sunday Adeyemo, popularly known as Sunday Igboho, over the controversial invasion of his Ibadan residence.
Professor Soyinka condemned the July 1, 2021, operation conducted by a combined team of the Department of State Services (DSS) and the Nigerian Army, describing it as both unlawful and criminal. He called for recognition of the breach of fundamental rights and accountability for the actions taken against the activist.
Soyinka’s intervention adds to the ongoing discourse on civil liberties and state conduct, highlighting the need for government transparency and respect for citizens’ rights even amidst security operations.
The call for redress resonates with human rights advocates who have repeatedly criticized the handling of the incident and its implications on public trust in law enforcement agencies.
