Amnesty International has strongly condemned the horrific attack that occurred in the early hours of Saturday, 8 November 2025, in Bargaja village, Isa Local Government Area of Sokoto State. Gunmen reportedly slaughtered at least five people, abducted dozens of women and girls, and left over 40 individuals critically injured from gunshot wounds. The attackers also looted local shops, leaving the community in shock and despair.
The human rights group described the incident as a stark illustration of the authorities’ inability to safeguard lives and property, emphasizing that such attacks not only strip victims of their right to life but also deprive survivors of their means of livelihood.
Amnesty International urged the Nigerian government to translate words into decisive action, calling for a swift and effective response to prevent further loss of life. The organization stressed that the protection of citizens’ human rights must be guaranteed if the government is to be taken seriously in its frequently stated commitment to end killings, abductions, and other crimes that continue to plague communities across the country.
The attack in Bargaja underscores a growing pattern of insecurity in Nigeria, highlighting the urgent need for comprehensive strategies to protect vulnerable communities and ensure justice for victims.
