The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), under its special enforcement exercise Operation Whirlwind, has handed over a tanker loaded with 60,000 litres of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) to the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority (NMDPRA) after its interception in Katsina State.
The tanker, which was seized on September 30th along Jibia Road, was reportedly found with fake documents and suspected of heading towards a border community for illegal diversion of petroleum products.
Speaking during the handover, officials of the Nigeria Customs Service said the operation reflects the Service’s commitment to protecting Nigeria’s economy and ensuring that petroleum products meant for local consumption are not smuggled across borders.
> “The handover signifies our continued commitment to safeguarding national energy security and working hand-in-hand with relevant agencies. Together, we are sending a strong message that economic sabotage through diversion will not be tolerated,”
— National Coordinator, Operation Whirlwind, stated.
Officials of the NMDPRA, who received the seized tanker, commended the Customs Service for its vigilance and proactive role in curbing the diversion of petroleum products.
They noted that such collaborative efforts between government agencies are essential to maintain fuel availability, stabilize market prices, and promote transparency within the downstream sector.
The Nigeria Customs Service further assured that Operation Whirlwind will continue to intensify border surveillance to deter smugglers and strengthen national economic security.
