Controversial Islamic cleric, Sheikh Ahmad Gumi, has accused some Christian groups in Nigeria’s Middle Belt of fabricating genocide claims to attract international sympathy.
Speaking during his current trip to Turkey, Gumi alleged that certain groups have been “burying empty coffins” to create the illusion of mass killings and push what he described as a false genocide narrative.
“Certain Christian groups in Nigeria’s Middle Belt have been burying empty coffins to fabricate mass killings and push a narrative of genocide,” Gumi alleged.
According to the cleric, a doctor had sent him a message claiming that some organizations were deliberately staging fake massacres, recording them as if real victims were involved. He described the alleged act as “desperation at its peak” and “a deliberate manipulation aimed at fueling hatred.”
Gumi also denied reports that he fled Nigeria following former U.S. President Donald Trump’s recent comments suggesting that Christians were being targeted in Nigeria.
“My trip to Turkey had been planned long before Trump’s statement,” he said, dismissing suggestions that he left the country out of fear of U.S. military intervention.
He accused his critics of using the genocide allegations to attack Islam and Nigeria’s Sharia system.
“This so-called Christian genocide is part of a well-orchestrated effort to malign Islam and fuel Islamophobia,” Gumi asserted.
The cleric further urged President Bola Tinubu to respond diplomatically to Trump’s remarks, describing them as “a direct affront to Nigeria’s sovereignty.”
He called on the Nigerian government to summon the U.S. ambassador for a retraction or consider severing diplomatic ties, while advising the country to diversify its global alliances.
“Nigeria must not be bullied or defined by foreign narratives. We should build new partnerships that respect our sovereignty,” Gumi said.
Gumi’s comments have sparked widespread reactions across Nigeria’s religious and political circles, with many calling for caution and verification of his claims.
