Osogbo, Osun State – In a major move to promote menstrual hygiene and empower the girl-child, the First Lady of Osun State, Chief Mrs. Titilola Adeleke, flagged off the distribution of 10,000 sanitary pads to secondary school girls across the state. The initiative is part of the Renewed Hope Initiative (RHI) from the office of the First Lady of Nigeria, Senator (Dr.) Oluremi Tinubu.

The programme, themed “Flow With Confidence,” took place at the Ataoja School of Science, Osogbo, and attracted government officials, educators, women leaders, and development partners. It aims to address the challenges faced by girls during their menstrual cycles, particularly in rural communities, ensuring no girl misses school due to lack of access to sanitary products.

Speaking at the event, Chief Mrs. Adeleke emphasized the importance of access to sanitary products for girls’ education and self-confidence:

> “In today’s modern world, no girl should have to miss school because of her inability to afford sanitary products. It’s unacceptable that our girls still continue to face significant challenges during their menstrual cycle, especially those in rural communities.”
“To our dear students and beneficiaries, this is for you. Make the most of it and do not sell the pads, stay in school, study hard, support one another, and never allow shame or stigma to take away your confidence. Use this opportunity to pursue your dreams boldly because you are the future of this nation and I believe in you.”

The Commissioner for Education, Hon. Dipo Eluwole, praised the First Lady for her motherly leadership and her commitment to children’s welfare. Other dignitaries, including Ms. Lola Adewale (Director of Gender Affairs), Chief Alice Otunla (Women Leader of PDP), and Dr. Olunike Adeleke, lauded Senator Oluremi Tinubu for her steadfast support of initiatives that directly benefit school girls.

As part of the programme, facilitators educated students on the importance of menstrual hygiene, proper pad usage, and personal health practices to prevent infections and maintain comfort during periods.

The event also saw the presence of key government officials, including Mr. M.A.K. Jimoh (Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Education), wives of commissioners, and education officers from all 30 Local Government Areas in the state.

This initiative is part of a broader effort to ensure that girls in Osun State are empowered to pursue education confidently, free from stigma and barriers related to menstruation.
