Forty-four members of the House of Representatives have appealed to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to exercise his constitutional powers and order the release of Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), who has been in detention since 2021.

The lawmakers — a bipartisan group drawn from both the northern and southern regions and operating under the banner of Concerned Federal Lawmakers for Peace and National Unity — made the appeal in a jointly signed letter and resolution addressed to the president.

According to the group, dropping the charges against Kanu and pursuing a political resolution would contribute significantly to national healing, peacebuilding, and the de-escalation of tension across the South-East.

They urged the president to direct the Attorney-General of the Federation (AGF) to, “as soon as practicable,” discontinue the ongoing prosecution and initiate a political settlement framework.

The lawmakers argued that previous administrations had adopted similar political solutions in handling sensitive national-security matters, adding that releasing Kanu would help rebuild trust and foster reconciliation at a time when the country is working to address multiple security challenges.

The group is expected to formally present its position to the presidency in the coming days.
