In recent weeks, Nigeria has faced a series of crises that have raised concerns across the nation. A few weeks ago, former President Donald Trump described Nigeria as “now disgraced,” a statement that sparked widespread outrage. Many Nigerians agree with this sentiment, especially considering that within just one week, 25 citizens were kidnapped, and a Nigerian general, along with other officers, was killed in a violent attack.
Recently, another terror attack occurred in Kwara State, further highlighting the country’s ongoing security challenges. Instead of uniting in the face of these threats, Nigerians are distracted by internal disagreements, party disputes, and political crises. The current turmoil within major political parties such as the PDP, Labour Party, and SDP appears to be deliberately caused by the government, which should be working to promote national unity.
Recalling a time under President Umaru Musa Yar’Adua, Peter Obi emphasized that the stability of all political parties was crucial for Nigeria’s democracy. During Yar’Adua’s administration, efforts were made to ensure that all parties operated within the law, fostering a healthy democratic environment. Today, Obi notes that the current government seems more focused on weakening opposition parties rather than strengthening democratic institutions, seeking to fragment parties like the PDP, Labour Party, and SDP.
Obi pointed out that in democratic countries worldwide, opposition parties are respected, elections reflect the will of the people, and inclusive governance is essential for peace and prosperity. He concluded with a hopeful message, asserting that a new Nigeria is possible if citizens and leaders unite to work towards a better future.
