Former Kaduna Senator Shehu Sani has criticized the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) for appealing to U.S. President Donald Trump for help in safeguarding Nigeria’s democracy. Sani made his stance known on Tuesday through a post on his verified X (formerly Twitter) account, reacting to the PDP’s recent public plea to the American president.
Reports indicated that the newly elected PDP National Chairman, Taminu Turaki, had urged President Trump to intervene and “save” Nigeria’s democracy. In response, Sani questioned the motives behind this appeal, asking, “The new PDP chairman is reportedly seeking Trump’s assistance. Is it to help them reclaim the party secretariat or to help them capture someone?”
Sani, who has long opposed foreign military involvement in Nigeria, emphasized his stance especially after Trump issued a warning over alleged Christian persecution in Nigeria. He reiterated that foreign intervention—whether political or military—is not the solution to Nigeria’s ongoing challenges.
Sani’s comments reflect his firm belief that Nigeria’s problems must be addressed domestically, without reliance on foreign powers.
