In a troubling incident that underscores issues around military impunity, a Nigerian soldier allegedly brandishing a knife caused panic at Fayose Market in Ado‑Ekiti (Kwara State), where he was reportedly hired to collect rent from traders and threatened them with violence.

According to multiple eyewitness accounts, the soldier—storming into the market—ordered a man to crawl into a dirty canal after the trader asked him to calm down. The soldier, clearly agitated, declared, “I’ll show you that army isn’t police,” before waving the knife in a menacing manner. One source said the soldier also threatened to stab anyone who dared come near him.

The confrontation left traders reeling and fearful, with some saying they had never witnessed such brazen behaviour from a uniformed officer. Sources claim the man told the soldier to “oga soja, eni suuru” (sir soldier, have mercy), prompting the soldier to force him into the dirty water.

Kwara Police later arrested the soldier, sparked by public outrage and the viral nature of the video circulating online.

Why This Matters:

It highlights growing concerns that military personnel—tasked with national defence—are acting as private enforcers in civilian settings.

The incident exposes a danger of unchecked abuse when soldiers are used for non-security roles.

It raises urgent questions about regulation and discipline within the Armed Forces, especially when civilians are involved.

As the story unfolds, stakeholders—including security agencies, civil society, and government officials—must address this disturbing dynamic to prevent soldiers from operating above the law.
