Abuja, Nigeria — In a bold response to Nigeria’s escalating insecurity, the Senate has called on the Armed Forces to immediately recruit at least 100,000 additional personnel to strengthen national security across the country.
The resolution comes in the wake of the abduction of 25 students from the Government Girls Comprehensive Senior Secondary School in Maga, Kebbi State, highlighting the urgent threat posed to children and communities in northern Nigeria.
Lawmakers also mandated the creation of an ad hoc committee to scrutinize the funding, expenditures, and outcomes of the Safe Schools Programme, aimed at protecting students in conflict-prone areas.
In addition, the Senate expressed condolences over the recent killing of Brigadier General Uba and other military personnel in Borno State, stressing the need for stronger support and resources for the Armed Forces in their fight against insurgency and criminal activities.
Senators warned that urgent and decisive action is needed to protect citizens, especially children, and ensure that security agencies can operate effectively to prevent further kidnappings and attacks.
As insecurity continues to disrupt lives across Nigeria, the Senate’s call underscores the government’s recognition that expanding and reinforcing the military is critical to restoring safety and confidence among the populace.
