The Nigerian Army has dismissed four soldiers serving in the North-East theatre of operations amid rising insecurity and a renewed wave of deadly attacks by the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP), deepening concerns about discipline and operational strain within the ranks.
The personnel — Mukaila Mutari, Isah Emmanuel, Kolomo Alex, and Ibrahim Musa — were removed from service for allegedly violating a military “standing order,” though the Army has not disclosed which directive was breached. Their dismissal, dated November 17, 2025, became public after photographs of the soldiers in desert camouflage surfaced on Wednesday.
The action comes at a time of heightened tension across the region, following reports that Brigadier-General Musa Uba was captured and killed by ISWAP terrorists. The killing has intensified pressure on military formations already battling persistent ambushes, raids, and attempted abductions by insurgent fighters.
Senior military officials, including Operation Hadin Kai Theatre Commander Major General Abdulsalam Abubakar, visited the Damboa base last Saturday to coordinate rescue efforts for personnel abducted during a violent ambush. That attack, launched late Friday night, claimed the lives of multiple soldiers and members of the Civilian Joint Task Force (CJTF).
Witness accounts describe the attackers as heavily armed and operating with precise coordination, suggesting a carefully planned strike aimed at weakening military positions and morale. The escalating pattern of ambushes and targeted killings has further destabilised the area and raised concerns about the safety of both military personnel and civilians.
As the Army addresses internal disciplinary issues, communities in the North-East continue to grapple with a security landscape that remains volatile, unpredictable, and increasingly deadly.
