Boko Haram insurgents have killed eight members of the Civilian Joint Task Force (CJTF) in a brutal ambush on Thursday in Warabe community, Gwoza Local Government Area of Borno State, leaving residents shaken and three volunteers still unaccounted for.
The attack occurred around 10:00 a.m. on November 20, when the CJTF members—who serve as the community’s frontline security team—left their homes to gather firewood. They were reportedly caught off guard by heavily armed fighters who opened fire, overwhelming the civilian defenders.
The CJTF in Warabe, like in many communities across Borno, consists of local volunteers who risk their lives daily to protect their people from insurgent attacks. Their deaths highlight once again the enormous sacrifices made by community-based forces bearing the brunt of the insurgency.
The fate of the three missing members remains unknown, deepening fears of possible abduction or further casualties. Security sources say a search effort is underway, but the difficult terrain and insurgent presence pose significant challenges.
Thursday’s attack underscores the persistent threat Boko Haram continues to pose to rural communities despite ongoing military operations in the region. It also raises concerns about the safety of local volunteers who often operate with limited resources but remain the first line of defence against insurgent advances.
Authorities are expected to intensify surveillance and reinforce security in the area as residents mourn the loss of their protectors.
