The Federal High Court in Abuja has ordered lawyer Ahmed Abdulrahman and his four co-defendants to stay in police custody at the Force Criminal Investigation Department (FCID) at the Police Headquarters. They are facing charges related to cyberbullying Senator Shehu Umar Buba.

The case, with the number FHC/ABJ/CR/526/2025, was filed on October 6 by Anthony Egwu and dates back to October 3. The defendants were arraigned in court on October 30 on an 11-count charge that includes cybercrime, defamation, and advance fee fraud. All five pleaded not guilty.

Justice Ajumogobia ordered that the defendants remain in custody while their bail applications are processed. During the last court session, lawyer Afeez Matanmi, representing Abdulrahman, informed the court that their bail request had been rescheduled. He also revealed that he had filed a legal reply on November 3 and requested bail for his client.

Another lawyer, A. A. Badmus, who represents the fourth defendant, said they also filed a bail application. However, the judge said the bail request could not be considered at that time because the court’s schedule had run out.

The charges against the defendants include conspiracy to cyberstalk Senator Shehu Buba Umar in 2025, which violates sections of Nigeria’s Cybercrimes Act. Specifically, Abdulrahman, the first defendant, is accused of sharing a video on TikTok and YouTube that falsely linked the senator to banditry, with the intent to defame him and damage his reputation. The prosecutor alleges Abdulrahman made these false claims using computer systems, aiming to cause chaos and fear.

Another defendant, Daure David, is accused of attempting to extort N5 million from the senator under false pretenses, claiming the money would be used to pay protesters against him.

Justice Rita Offili Ajumogobia has scheduled a hearing for November 24 to decide on the bail applications and to continue the case.

The Inspector-General of Police (IGP) identified the defendants as Abdulrahman (41), Daure David (35), Ishaq Muhammed (25), Abdulrashid Musa (30), and Nasir Abubakar (21).
