Lagos State, in collaboration with the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) and the Government of Japan, has stepped up its campaign against cholera with a community-focused sensitisation programme at Ikosi–Isheri Local Council Development Area (LCDA).
The initiative, under Project 240236—“Emergency Capacity Building of Informal Food and Water Vendors and Waste Workers in Flood-Affected Lagos to Combat Cholera Outbreaks”—targets food handlers, water vendors, and waste workers, equipping them with vital knowledge to prevent cholera and other waterborne diseases.
Held at the Ikosi–Isheri Multipurpose Hall in Ketu, the event drew community members, students, and local vendors. The campaign emphasized proper environmental hygiene, safe food handling, water treatment, and responsible waste management, particularly during the rainy season when cholera risks are heightened.
Speaking at the event, Dr. Babatunde Ajayi, General Manager of LASEPA, described the campaign as “a call to action,” stressing that while cholera is preventable, poor sanitation, unsafe water, and improper waste management create fertile ground for outbreaks. He urged residents to practice regular handwashing, drinking safe water, and keeping their surroundings clean, calling on them to act as “ambassadors of hygiene” in their communities.
Dr. Hassan Sanuth, Director of Sanitation at the Lagos State Ministry of Environment and Water Resources, highlighted the importance of proper water treatment and adequate washing of fruits and vegetables, noting ongoing government efforts to transform dumpsites into material recovery centers to reduce flooding and improve waste management.
The UNIDO Field Coordinator, Mr. Charles Uzoma, commended Lagos State for its proactive measures and appreciated Japan’s support for funding the year-long project, describing it as “both timely and strategic.” Mrs. Adedayo Adebayo, Deputy Director of Environmental Sustainability at LASEPA, reaffirmed the state government’s commitment to building a clean, safe, and healthy environment through community-focused initiatives and multi-sector partnerships.
The programme, which has previously reached locations including Ikorodu, Alimosho, Ojo, Yaba, and Lagos Island, reflects Lagos State’s ongoing dedication to safeguarding public health and preventing cholera outbreaks across the state.
