In a urgent meeting on Friday night, Nigeria’s top security boss, Mr. Tosin Adeola Ajayi, the Director General of the Department of State Services (DSS), briefed President Bola Tinubu about Nigeria’s worsening security situation. The country is facing a sharp increase in kidnappings, attacks by bandits, and violence in many communities across the nation.

One of the most shocking recent incidents happened in Kebbi State, where armed attackers stormed a girls’ secondary school and abducted 25 students while they were sleeping. Sadly, they also killed the vice-principal. Schools in several parts of Kwara State have been shut down after gunmen attacked a church, killing worshippers and kidnapping the pastor and other members of the congregation.

Beyond these high-profile cases, security analysts warn that Nigeria is battling a nationwide crisis. An intelligence report shows that there are over 270 areas where terrorists and bandits operate freely. In Nasarawa State, residents recently protested after gunmen abducted an elderly person and caused violence in their community.

The problem is enormous. Between July 2024 and June 2025, there were more than 4,700 kidnapping cases recorded across Nigeria, with families paying over ₦2.57 billion in ransom money, according to a recent study.

Earlier this year, six senior officials from Nigeria’s Ministry of Defence were kidnapped on a highway, revealing how widespread and dangerous these criminal networks have become.

During the briefing, Mr. Ajayi is believed to have told President Tinubu that Nigeria needs to boost intelligence gathering, improve coordination among security agencies, and create special units to fight kidnapping, especially targeting schools and rural villages. He may also have called on communities to work more closely with security forces and share information about suspicious activities.

Many Nigerians and community leaders are now questioning whether the government can effectively protect its citizens. The recent church attack in Kwara has added to concerns that religious groups are being targeted for ransom and political reasons.

For President Tinubu, this briefing comes at a critical time. People are demanding quick action to rescue kidnapped victims, restore security, and implement long-term solutions. Some experts warn that Nigeria can no longer wait to respond — it must prevent these tragedies before they happen.

Now, everyone is watching to see if the government will follow through on its promises or if more lives will be affected.
