The Federal Government has taken a major step to protect Lagos’ critical infrastructure with the launch of a new Marine and Infrastructure Protection Unit by the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), alongside the donation of a speed boat by the Minister of Works, Engr. David Umahi.
The initiative, unveiled by the Lagos State Command on the directive of the NSCDC Commandant General, Prof. Ahmed Abubakar Audi, is targeted at strengthening security around the Third Mainland Bridge and other federal bridges heavily used by millions of commuters.
Lagos State Commandant, Keshinro Adedotun, who inaugurated the new marine unit headed by ACC Oloyede Emmanuel Ige, said the deployment of the speed boat would significantly enhance maritime patrols, boost surveillance, and tackle activities that threaten national assets. These threats include illegal dredging, excavation, encroachment, and other forms of sabotage that compromise the stability and safety of federal bridges.
Adedotun emphasized that the new operations will ensure timely detection of harmful practices, improve commuter safety, and reinforce the Corps’ presence along the waterways. He appealed to licensed operators and coastal residents to comply strictly with existing regulations, warning that defaulters will face firm enforcement.
The announcement was made in a statement issued by CSC Babawale Afolabi, National Public Relations Officer of the NSCDC, who described the development as a crucial boost to the nation’s infrastructure protection efforts.
