During the 2025 G20 Leaders’ Summit in Johannesburg, South Africa, Nigeria’s President Bola Ahmed Tinubu made important calls to the world leaders. He asked them to create a global system that helps communities in Africa who host valuable resources like critical minerals. He wants these resources to be processed and added value right where they are, so local communities benefit and grow.

President Tinubu also supported the idea of setting international ethical rules for Artificial Intelligence (AI). He believes AI can help countries develop faster if used responsibly, safely, and fairly.

He explained that for Nigeria and Africa, these minerals are more than just natural resources—they are the key to transforming industries and creating jobs. But he stressed that the wealth from these resources must benefit the communities where they are found through fair, transparent, and accountable practices.

The Nigerian leader urged the global community to support local industries that turn raw materials into finished products, creating jobs and economic growth for local people. He said managing resources responsibly is not only about economics but also about doing what’s morally right.

President Tinubu emphasized that green and digital progress should focus on people’s well-being, offering decent work and opportunities for everyone. Nigeria is investing in skills training, digital literacy, and entrepreneurship to prepare its youth for the future.

He called on G20 leaders to cooperate more on technology transfer, capacity building, and investments that respect human dignity and promote inclusion. On AI, he said the goal is to make sure AI benefits everyone—creating jobs and opportunities, not replacing people or causing exclusion.

He also stressed the importance of partnerships between rich and developing countries to harness AI responsibly and fairly. The G20 should address biases in AI and promote international dialogue to share benefits and manage risks.

Furthermore, President Tinubu urged the leaders to reform the outdated global financial system. He said current frameworks are not suited to today’s challenges and that they must be updated to support developing nations better. Many African economies are struggling with rising debts, which threaten stability everywhere.

He called on the G20 to focus on debt sustainability and responsible management of critical resources to ensure inclusive growth. Only fair and responsible policies can lead to a better future for all.

The statement was delivered on behalf of President Tinubu by his Vice President Kashim Shettima. The report was prepared by Stanley Nkwocha, Senior Special Assistant to the President, on November 22, 2025.
