Bauchi State was shocked yesterday when five police officers were killed during a deadly ambush in Sabon Sara village, Darazo Local Government Area. Two other officers were injured in the attack, which happened while police officers were responding to a clash between herders and farmers.
The officers belonged to different units, including the Rapid Response Squad (RRS), Anti-Kidnapping Unit (AKU), and State Intelligence Department (SID). They were caught in gunfire by unknown attackers believed to be armed Fulani youths. During the gunfight, some of the attackers were reportedly shot and neutralized.
The officers who lost their lives have been identified as DSP Ahmad Muhammad, ASP Mustapha Muhammad, Inspector Amarhel Yunusa, Inspector Idris Ahmed, and Corporal Isah Muazu. The injured officers are Inspector Isah Musa and Inspector Yusuf Gambo, who are receiving medical care.
Bauchi’s Police Commissioner, CP Sani-Omolori Aliyu, visited the scene to assess the situation and mourn the fallen officers. He promised that those responsible for the attack will be brought to justice. Police reinforcements were quickly sent to the area to secure the location and recover the bodies.
In a statement, police spokesman CSP Ahmed Muhammad Wakil said:
“Some of our officers have paid the supreme price in the line of duty … we remain committed to protecting lives and property in Bauchi State.”
This tragic incident highlights the growing security challenges in northern Nigeria, where police officers face great danger while trying to keep peace and protect communities.
