Abuja – Activist and journalist Omoyele Sowore has strongly criticized the Nigeria Police Force’s recent announcement on the withdrawal of officers providing security for VIPs, calling it a “Christmas bonanza” for the police hierarchy.

In a post shared on social media, Sowore accused the Nigeria Police, under Inspector General Kayode Egbetokun, of having no real intention to implement the withdrawal, claiming that VIPs would continue to reward officers, maintaining preferential treatment. He also took aim at President Bola Tinubu, asserting that the administration is not serious about police reform, particularly in light of what he calls the “illegal tenure extension” granted to the IGP, whom he describes as “clearly incompetent.”

Sowore demanded transparency as a prerequisite for the policy to be credible. He called on the police to publicly disclose a complete list of VIPs currently enjoying protection, detail the number of officers assigned to each individual or group, and reassign personnel to regular police duties across the country.

He concluded that until these steps are taken, the announcement remains “nothing but another dishonest pronouncement.”

The activist’s remarks highlight growing public skepticism over police reform initiatives and the persistent perception of preferential treatment within the force.
