In Adamawa State, the Ministry of Water Resources, together with the WASH (Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene) Sector, commemorated the 2025 World Toilet Day at Kolere Primary School in Mubi North Local Government Area. The event was held under the theme “Sanitation in a Changing World.”

World Toilet Day, celebrated annually on November 19, was started in 2001 by the World Toilet Organization and officially recognized by the United Nations in 2013. The day aims to raise awareness about the global sanitation crisis and motivate efforts to provide everyone with access to safe and hygienic toilets.

During the event, the Commissioner for Water Resources, Hon. Ayuba Tanko Audu, emphasized the importance of toilets, describing them as more than just structures—they are critical infrastructure that protect people's dignity, health, and support sustainable development.

The Commissioner highlighted serious sanitation issues facing Adamawa State, including poor WASH (Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene) indicators, worsened by insecurity and insurgency. These challenges have destroyed vital facilities, leaving many households without access to basic toilets and safe water, and increasing the risk of preventable diseases.

He also pointed out that the humanitarian situation in the region is concerning, with Adamawa, Borno, and Yobe States recording high rates of malnutrition—between 15% and 20.9%—in at least 17 Local Government Areas (LGAs). Poor sanitation and limited livelihoods have contributed to these conditions.

Despite these difficulties, Hon. Audu assured the public that the State Government is committed to improving sanitation. This effort is guided by the 2023–2025 Medium-Term Sector Strategy (MTSS), which aligns with Nigeria’s National Development Plan and Sustainable Development Goal 6—clean water and sanitation for all.

He also thanked the state governor, Rt. Hon. Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri, for prioritizing sanitation investments, even though funding gaps still exist. The Commissioner commended national and international partners working in WASH for their support in ensuring that more households gain access to safe toilets and clean water.

In his closing remarks, WASH Sector Coordinator Kabiru Saidu noted that the theme “Sanitation in a Changing World” reflects the realities in Adamawa, where sanitation systems must adapt to challenges like insecurity, climate change, population growth, and aging infrastructure.

As part of the celebration, the Commissioner and his team visited the Water Trucking Centre, where ongoing chlorination activities are helping to improve water safety, and the Cholera Treatment Centre at FMC Mubi, to assess efforts in combating waterborne diseases.
