The Nigerian Army has intensified its campaign against oil theft in the Niger Delta, arresting four suspected vandals and seizing stolen petroleum products valued at more than ₦150 million. The breakthrough comes after a series of coordinated operations by troops of the 6 Division between November 10 and 23.

According to military authorities, soldiers stormed multiple hotspots across the region, dismantling seven illegal refining sites reportedly used by criminal syndicates to process stolen crude. In the operation, troops recovered over 109,000 litres of illicit products, including about 88,000 litres of crude oil and more than 21,000 litres of illegally refined diesel.

Lt. Col. Danjuma Jonah, spokesperson for the Division, said the crackdown reflects a renewed effort to choke off the network of economic saboteurs draining Nigeria’s oil wealth. Major General Emmanuel Eric Emekah, the General Officer Commanding, praised the troops’ “resilience and professionalism” while urging communities to share credible intelligence to help put an end to the activities of oil thieves.

The latest operation underscores the scale of the challenge: while government forces continue to push back, illegal refining camps remain widespread, driven by organised criminal networks that thrive on weak surveillance and deep-rooted local complicity. For a region already grappling with environmental degradation and economic stagnation, the military says breaking these networks is crucial to restoring stability and protecting national revenue.
