On Saturday afternoon, notorious armed bandit leader Kachalla Dan Sa’adiyya ordered Gama Giwa community and nearby villages in Maradun Local Government Area, Zamfara State, to pay a hefty tax of ₦50 million within one week.

This new levy comes after months of forced labor on bandit-controlled farms, where villagers were made to work throughout the rainy season without any payment. Instead of relief after the harvest, residents now face another round of economic hardship and intimidation from the bandits.

Community members say the unpaid labor and the new tax have pushed families into greater fear and suffering. They feel trapped in a system where armed bandits control their livelihoods, restrict their movement, and even influence the outcome of their farming season.

Despite these oppressive conditions, residents continue to pray and hope for a future where their safety, dignity, and economic survival are no longer dictated by coercion and violence.

A question that echoes across Zamfara communities is: How did bandit warlords become the de-facto revenue collectors in parts of Nigeria? This situation highlights the growing challenge of insecurity and banditry in the region.
