The Lagos State Government has called for stronger, sustainable partnerships to tackle the growing wastewater crisis threatening public health and the environment. This message dominated discussions at a stakeholders’ forum organised by the Lagos State Wastewater Management Office (LSWMO) and held at the Nigeria–British Chambers of Commerce in Lekki.

Speaking at the event, the Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, Mr Tokunbo Wahab, warned that Lagos—now a rapidly expanding global economic hub—is grappling with the combined pressures of swift urbanisation and inadequate wastewater management systems.
According to him, “several unhealthy and illegal wastewater disposal practices persist,” despite heavy government investments, putting millions of residents at risk.

Represented by the Director of Sanitation Services, Dr Hassan Sanuth, the Commissioner stressed that the forum was crucial in raising awareness, especially in high-risk communities in Lekki and Eti-Osa, where poor sanitation practices continue to undermine public health and environmental safety.

Chairman of the Lagos State House Committee on Environment, Hon. Engr. Rasheed Adebola Shabi, urged stakeholders to take the lead in changing entrenched habits. He reminded participants that meaningful progress in wastewater management must begin with individual and organisational responsibility. The House of Assembly, he assured, is ready to provide supportive legislation to strengthen compliance.

General Manager of LSWMO, Engr. Adefemi Afolabi, reaffirmed the agency’s zero-tolerance stance on pollution, urging residents and businesses to adopt proper wastewater treatment and hygiene practices. He noted that sustainable sanitation is essential for a safer, healthier Lagos.

The forum, themed “Strengthening Partnership for Sustainable Wastewater & Faecal Sludge Management in Lagos State,” underscored a central message: Lagos cannot win the fight against environmental pollution without committed collaboration from its citizens, organisations, and government agencies.
